Action Alert: Tell the Maryland Senate to ban seclusion in all public schools

Great news – we have proposed legislation in the Maryland Senate that would ban seclusion in all public schools across the state and limit the use of seclusion in nonpublic schools (SB 0705). The legislation would also expand reporting requirements and require the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) to develop an accountability system. This legislation would be a substantial step forward.

We need your help! If you could take a few minutes and write a brief statement of support for the legislation, it could make a huge difference. It does not need to be lengthy. Just a few sentences would be fantastic. If you have a story you’d like to share, please do so. If you have related expertise, please share. Whether you are in Maryland or not, I believe that anyone who has been directly impacted or had their family affected is an expert on the issue.

The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, March 2, 2022, at 1:00 (ET). You’ll need MyMGA account to submit your testimony. I know it is a big ask, but your help would be greatly appreciated. Once you have your account, the testimony needs to be submitted between 3/1 at 4 PM (ET) and 3/2 at 10 AM (ET).

Steps:

1) Create a MyMGA account

2) Submit your testimony for SB 0705 by going to Witness Signup between 3/1 at 4 PM (ET) and 3/2 at 10 AM (ET)

3) That’s it!Thank you so much for your help and support!
