The Alliance Against Seclusion and Restraint (AASR) is determined to make a difference. Our organization works to raise awareness in the trail of destruction left in the wake of inappropriate and often abusive use of seclusion and restraint in our schools.

Dozens of children have died while being physically restrained, and many more have been injured and traumatized. The use of prone restraint, such as the one that killed Cornelius Frederick in a Michigan school, is extremely dangerous and can lead to death by asphyxiation. Sadly, children are also regularly forced into seclusion cells in our schools with predictably horrific effects on their mental health, educational trajectories, and behavioral outcomes. The use of restraint and seclusion disproportionately impact young, disabled, Black, and brown students. This is a human rights and civil rights issue. We can and must do better.
This year, the Alliance Against Seclusion and Restraint (AASR) has been instrumental in supporting the Keeping All Students Safe Act (KASSA), which was reintroduced in Congress. The legislation would prohibit seclusion as well as prone and supine restraint. In the coming year, AASR will continue to offer valuable training to parents, teachers, advocates, and others promoting alternatives to restraint and seclusion. We will be speaking at national conferences and working with higher education to raise awareness and solutions.
Please consider making a tax-deductible donation. Your contribution is more than just a donation; it helps create safer schools for students, teachers, and staff. Your donation helps us promote a trauma-informed, neuroscience-aligned, relationship-driven approach to supporting all children. We can and must do better for our children.
